<image:caption>1st prize - The Temple for Hilma by Andrea Chan JURY’S COMMENTS: Mesmerizing and deep, The Temple for Hilma presents a wonderful way of experiencing Hilma af Klint, each visitor being led on a journey within the museum. The idea of displaying the art in specific and color-coordinated spaces promises to be truly immersive and unique, and shows an understanding of and connection with af Klint’s work and movement. Layout, building, storytelling and how you move through the influences of her work and life make this project stand out. The presentation is beautifully illustrated with a painterly/graphical language, and the well-written text brings yet another dimension to the proposal by highlighting the spiritual aspects of af Klint’s life and further visualizing the visitor trajectory. Rather than simply providing space for her art, The Temple strives to be a part of the experience, seeking to convey af Klint’s ambience to each visitor in a physical way. Overall, the project is quite dearing and seducing, just like Hilma af Klint’s art.</image:caption>

<image:title>A Temple for Hilma</image:title>
<image:caption>2nd prize - Hilma’s Garden by Amy Wong and Sarish Younis JURY’S COMMENTS: A very well executed project that successfully considers af Klint’s enthusiasm for nature, synthesizing a tangible relationship between art, built environment and nature. The proposal seamlessly guides the visitor through buildings and landscape alike, focusing on the courtyard to help promote a sense of exploration and adventure. A constant visibility and presence of the art from inside as well as outside the buildings – and the sense of transparency – creates an intimate, human scale of the architecture. Its smaller scale and the fragmentation of the spaces makes this a museum you would like to visit, not only for the art, but for the journey through the site. Plans are well thought out, drawings very strong and the visuals pleasant, all in all an elegant, evocative manner of representation that strengthens the concept.</image:caption>

<image:title>A Temple for Hilma</image:title>
<image:caption>3rd prize - Depository by Tobias Johannes Haag, Lukas Brecheler and Yonne Luca Hack JURY’S COMMENTS: A successfully represented “archive museum” concept. Even though specific thought hasen't been given to each category and cycle in af Klint's substantial body of work, it presents a convincing thought on how this collection may live on in the near future, and the proposal excellently translates Hilma’s hybrid art movement into architecture. The presentation shows how the massing and form of the architecture translates into a symbol of the breadth and signficance of the artist and her collection. The curvature of the shoreline and position of the road dictates the shape of the museum without it feeling forced: the narrow building almost forces the visitor to always experience the art in the same way. The illustrations give a wonderful sense of space vibe and have an aesthetic quality, even on their own.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Honorable mention – Habitat for Abstraction by Asger Høegh Christiansen, Rasmus Helleskov Wieleman and Nanna-Rose Reinevald Broch JURY’S COMMENTS: The graphic representation of spaces here is simple yet lovely, with the architectural volumes being interesting and logically laid out with appropriate scale for each intended use. The curiosity of af Klint is evident in the organisation of the collection, exploring a variety types of scales and flows for the different groups of artworks.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Honorable mention – Hilma af Klint by Samuel Quagliotto JURY’S COMMENTS: The proposal offers a beautiful journey through the building as well as presenting a convincing way for visitors to experience af Klint’s art in an intense maner through architectural innovations. The presentation is well put together with appealing visuals and colors. Plans are well executed, spaces well thought out, with the fragmented nature of the architecture creating pocket spaces that come together as a whole.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Honorable mention – A Temple for Hilma by Gaspard Journet, Joshua Thomas How, Cesar Tome Pizarro, Elisa Lopez Lucas and Luca Tesei JURY’S COMMENTS: An absolutely beautiful exploded axonometric drawing, explaining the layout but also showcasing the complexity of spaces and layering within the building. The attention to both the spatial experience and to the collection gives purpose to the museum, rendering the proposal a temple vibe.</image:caption>

<image:caption>1st prize - Parking Tower by Jonathan Benner and John Bassett JURY’S COMMENTS: Parking Tower responds perfectly to the brief by considering “experience of space” as the alternate programmatic use. Although there is a roof garden at the top and a farmers market at the bottom, it is the more intangible gateway idea - and the convincing way it’s visualized - that becomes the main secondary feature. The play between the slender floor slabs and the heavy top is beautifully designed and the visualizations show a very believable structure - engineering and architecture melt together. Internally, the staircases are amazing spaces, and would surely provide not only a transitional space between driving and walking, but also an opportunity of tranquillity and reflection. Its overall appeal is strengthened by the fact that it does not rely on technological feats like car elevators - keeping all fictional running costs to a minimum. Presentation-wise everything is very well tied together, and helps conveying a feeling of grandeur.</image:caption>

<image:caption>2nd prize - Park Your Soul in Heaven by Pedro Martins, Ana Santos and Miguel Pereira JURY’S COMMENTS: At a first glance, Park your Soul in Heaven has a fairly general approach of dealing with cars, by hiding them rather than addressing the issue more directly. But at a closer look, it relates to cars and urbanisation on a much larger scale, and over a longer time-frame, by drawing on the notion that cars have, by being a crucial part of how modern cities are shaped, forced cemeteries out of cities. Additionally, it makes an interesting point in times when traditional methods of burial and memorial, using vast areas of land, are coming to an end as the world population (and numbers of deceased) continues to expand: a new vision for commemorating our dead is required. Park Your Soul in Heaven helps to place this in a context that prevents it from coming across as morbid, and sets up a dialogue about dealing with death in the future. While the two programs are physically separated from each other, they are tied together not only by their theoretical relation, but also through their uncluttered and contained design, where the columbarium distinguishes itself with a softer, warmer feel. The slim arches supporting the top volume lends a dignified air to the ceremonial space. The clear diagrams explain structure and concept convincingly, and sit well among the renderings.</image:caption>

<image:caption>3rd prize - The Community Actuator by Manson Fung JURY’S COMMENTS: This is a concept that looks beyond the car, and proposes a way of using the building both with and without vehicles. It is especially interesting at a point in time when the automobile is facing more and more criticism, and many cities are seeking to reduce the use and dependence of cars. The approach of treating all spaces in the same manner would lead to the composition of the building changing over time - based on how the tenants decide to utilize the compartments – and by doing so puts a finger on the possibilities/issues with the vast areas (in central New York City) that would become available if the car gave way to other uses. The pragmatic way of stacking and shifting the volumes gives the building a dynamic look and feel, and the almost filigree structure makes you think of Crystal Palace – a legion of delicate structure forming an overall volume that is both confident and considerate. Everything is well explained, and the lightness of the board layout mirrors that of the building.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Honorable mention - High Line Cinemas by Will Fu and Logan Steele JURY’S COMMENTS: The drive-in cinema is a straightforward idea with an exotic appeal within a city. By choosing a secondary feature that operates in the night-time the daily cycle of the building is extended, and a day-time parking garage lends to a natural transition between the two. This is enhanced by the screens façade positions: they transform the building from a quiet structure during the day to a glowing beacon during the night.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Honorable mention – Park(Ing) by My-Linh Pham JURY’S COMMENTS: By having no defined use allocation, Park(ing) allows the user to dictate the programmatic space, which in turn promotes interaction not only between different user groups, but more importantly, also between motorists and walking visitors. The strong sectional quality of the design works as a unifying gesture throughout the structure.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Honorable mention - Soundpark by Jochen Kreuter, Joscha Treeck, Jakob Braun and Sebastian Haumer Soundpark takes an invigorating approach in dealing with cars – taking what is often considered as their worst feature, and celebrates it. The proposal is also holding back on adding a multitude of features, allowing this one to stand out even more. The simplicity of the concept is consistent with the various public art sound installations that have occurred in NYC over the years, and this has the potential to become something truly special. As seen in the coherent presentation, the sound output objects become sculptural objects, artworks in themselves.</image:caption>

<image:caption>1st prize – Dromneberget by Nicolay Boyadjiev and Don Toromanoff JURY’S COMMENTS: Dromneberget is as a statement about humanity’s destructive relationship with the environment, and how we have always given ourselves the liberty of interact with it as we choose. A common theme for bringing public awareness about the environment is to disconnect people from technology in favor of letting them interact with nature in a very hands-on fashion. This proposal turns that concept on its head and suggests that technology could be the savior rather than the enemy. The proposal responds to the brief with a refreshing touch of science fiction by barring humans from the area as a means of safeguarding nature, suggesting that this future might not be too far away. However, to avoid bordering to dystopia, it proposes that technology could actually be of as much benefit to humans as to the environment. By offering the possibility of a digital visit, the Omne Mountain becomes a very democratic affair, available for everyone regardless of location. The celebration becomes an act of preservation, and vice versa. Clear diagrams and valid arguments provide a coherent storyline that comes to life in a visually strong presentation, turning Dromneberget into an alluring proposition.</image:caption>

<image:caption>2nd prize - Retreat/Shelter/Nest by András Dankházi JURY’S COMMENTS: The beautiful and distinct presentation style offers a poetic and engaging storyline about approaching nature and becoming a part of it. While always being centered on the environment, the concept also makes sure to keep the basic needs of the human visitor in mind. Retreat/Shelter/Nest is responding to the brief on an emotional level as well as a technical one – the shelters are designed to intrude as little as possible on the flora and fauna, with a clear structural approach that effortlessly adapts to the changing landscape of Omne Mountain. By inviting nature itself to interact with the structures, Retreat/Shelter/Nest offers humans a unique first-hand experience of the wild, equally appealing throughout the seasonal cycles.</image:caption>

<image:caption>3rd prize – Inside Nature by Johan Meisel JURY’S COMMENTS: Rather than trying to embody every aspect of the brief within the architecture, Inside Outside leaves both the educational and recreational aspects of the brief to nature itself. By offering simple and flexible lodging structures that over time will merge with their surroundings, the proposal invites people to experience the High Coast on nature’s terms. The straightforwardness of both design and presentation creates a simple but enticing invitation to immerse yourself in the flora and fauna of the High Coast: a proposal that provides an intuitive approach to nature with minimum interference and maximum longevity.</image:caption>

<image:title>Hello Nature</image:title>
<image:caption>Honorable mention – Monument by Severino Iritano and Daniele Bonetti JURY’S COMMENTS: A poetic project that celebrates nature by placing a series of monuments on the site. With each structure offering a unique way of experiencing the elements of nature, the educational aspect is addressed in an ingenious way. Despite their size, the simple design of the four buildings makes them feel very much at home in the area, and the sensitive presentation furthers the idea of a concept that offers visitors an educational as well as an emotional experience.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Honorable mention – Back to the Future by Silvia Marcialis and Alessandra Mattacchione JURY’S COMMENTS: By choosing a structural concept associated to childhood memories, the proposal adds a playful twist to the more serious matter of reconnecting man with nature. <image:caption>Honorable mention – Omne Mountain Camp by Mikael Westin JURY’S COMMENTS: Omne Mountain Camp seeks to counter the negative aspects of people leaving the countryside in favor of cities by proposing a camping community that is of equal benefit regardless if you live in an urban (experiential) or rural (economic) area. The approach of setting up a base camp allows for a communal feel while the dwelling units scattered throughout the area allows for more privacy. The use of different pods for different seasons guarantees a unique visit every time. The detailed diagrams and drawings bring the concept together into a very well-advised and consistent project.</image:caption>

<image:caption>1st prize - Camley Street Sylvan Chapel by Paul Cohoon JURY’S COMMENTS: The poetic atmosphere of the presentation combined with a convincing approach, Camley Street Sylvan Chapel offers a reflective and highly enticing space, inviting nature to take to the place of religion. The detailed programming and attentive siting propose a clear vision of spirituality as embedded in the life of this neighbourhood. The meticulous attention to specific architectural moments as well as a perfect mix of built form and landscape enriches the project further. Rather than proposing a bold and provocative idea, Camley Street Sylvan Chapel suggests a subtle yet convincing attitude to the concept of faith as we see it today.</image:caption>

<image:caption>2nd prize - Faith That the Sky Is Not Falling by W. Allen Zimmerman and Marie Wastiau JURY’S COMMENTS: A beautiful idea and a consistent theme, Faith That the Sky Is Not Falling performs in multiple ways by embracing both the individual and contemplative nature of faith, but also the larger communal aspect of religion. The metaphor between over-world and under-world is intriguing, as is the proximity and the way that the proposal sits on the site. The different levels of interaction and seclusion add to the possibilities for visitors to engage, and the personal sanctuaries ties in neatly with the storyline about self-belief. The appealing aesthetics could even add to the regeneration of the area.</image:caption>

<image:caption>3rd prize - You Are Here by Felicity Barbur and Edward Crooks JURY’S COMMENTS: An engaging and self-explanatory presentation of an innovative take on worship. By shifting focus from a single belief to all religions, You Are Here addresses faith in a very democratic sense. This is in turn enhanced by allowing the space to transcend into the air for all to experience. The proposal is further solidified by bringing boating culture and the artistic resources of neighbouring school Central St Martins school into the equation.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Honorable mention - Russell’s Teapot by Adam Hewgill and Louise Claeys JURY’S COMMENTS: By suggesting a place that focuses on asking questions rather than following set directives, Russell’s Teapot is a comforting alternative for those in doubt. The introduction of an alien object turned into a tearoom adds a playful undertone to a serious matter, which offers a welcoming community where focus lies on discussion and contemplation.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Honorable mention - St. Martins Church by Rory Allen and Tony Lees JURY’S COMMENTS: The concept enacts spirituality at many different scales: from the public realm to the secluded bench, from the church to the classroom. The use of art as a beacon works well, and the clear strategy for a procession towards the entrance along the water is dramatic and shows an understanding of the site. The church interior has been rethought from a formalized space to a casual, inviting one. It is not desacralized to the point of feeling like a school, yet it has the inviting ease of a community center.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Honorable mention - Soaking Prayer In Year 2100 by Simonet Noe JURY’S COMMENTS: Soaking Prayer In Year 2100 takes the standpoint of world religions as static entities in need of rescue. Paired with a comment on the state of the environment, the approach exposes two contradictory impulses behind thinking about religions in contemporary society. On the one hand religions are seen as fixed, immutable phenomena. But this same immutability threatens their existence. The proposal suggests a Noah’s Ark for religions, saving them just in time before the flood: figuratively and literally.</image:caption>

<image:title>Prison Puzzle</image:title>
<image:caption>1st prize - (proto) Prison by Alex Warr and Zach Walters JURY’S COMMENTS: (proto) Prison manages to tackle two of the United States’ greatest challenges: incarceration and sustainable energy production. The two very disparate subjects are poetically entwined, moving towards something grander than the sum of its parts. By programmatically blurring the boundaries between prisoners and outside society – and facilitating interaction – the proposal reduces the risk of recidivism while at the same time furthering important research. Conceptually, the inverted panopticon along with the three programmatic rings (cell blocks, research and support) convinces and responds well to the challenges and opportunities offered by the site. The scheme is captivating, not only because of its technical creativity, but also because of the way it addresses the brief with both clarity and ingenuity. The introduction of an alternative energy research facility, directly run in conjunction with the prison, transforms the conventional program of the prison into one that is more related to education, research and innovation. Held together by a straightforward and lucid presentation, (proto) Prison is a well-deserving winner.</image:caption>

<image:caption>2nd prize - To the Moon and Back Again by Lina Aakerøy, Wenzel Mielke, Elias Solberg and Charlotte Hoaas JURY’S COMMENTS: To the Moon and Back again is a believable and appealingly presented proposal with clear strategy and realistic solutions. By emphasizing prisoner rehabilitation at all stages of the sentence, it offers a considerate and attainable way of reducing recidivism. Well-written text based on contemporary research, accompanied by beautiful illustrations, explain the project in an engaging and convincing manner. With a focus on contact – be it in the form of visits, podcasts or relocation to a transfer building – the proposal ensures a continuous connection to society and therefore a greater chance of reintegration after release. While the absence of radical ideas might be regarded as somewhat humble, the confidence in which the pragmatic solution is told renders To the Moon and Back into a positive and impressive proposal.</image:caption>

<image:title>Prison Puzzle</image:title>
<image:caption>3rd Prize - Borderless Prison by Emmanuelle Agustoni, Konstantinos Katsas and Sergio Antonio Torres Escobar JURY’S COMMENTS: Borderless Prison is a proposal that addresses the main aspects of the competition by successfully combining three essential elements: prison concept, context and design. Here the landscape itself is considered as part of a systemized network of prisons. If, indeed, a prison is to be situated in the desert then should it not be embedded therein? The diagram of the proposal is elementary, convincing, and (although cursory in its visual explanation), well represented. The simplicity of the line strengthens the progressive design as the antithesis of contemporary prisons: here the immensity of the desert becomes the wall for the borderless prison.</image:caption>

<image:title>Prison Puzzle</image:title>
<image:caption>Honorable mention - Catharsis by Alžbeta Barančíková JURY’S COMMENTS: Catharsis offers a spiritual take on the state of the prisoner and his troubled relationship with society. Through careful analysis of human behavior and destiny related to incarceration, the proposal argues for a sentence which is mostly spent off-site, at a carefully chosen location. Although idealistic, it gives purpose to the different stages of a sentence – physically and emotionally. Conceptually strong and beautifully portrayed.</image:caption>

<image:title>Prison Puzzle</image:title>
<image:caption>Honorable mention - Plug-In Prison by Michael Macfarlane and Adam Telfer JURY’S COMMENTS: Like a 21st century spatial interpretation of the initiation rites of the Roman Colosseum – in which prisoners were incarcerated, presented, and played – this rather prophetic and well represented proposal explores a fascinating, if not fundamentally concerning, attitude toward rehabilitation through social engineering and surveillance. By turning physical architecture into a secondary consideration in favor of a virtual environment, Plug-in Prison offers a tailor-made solution for every prisoner in complete isolation mode. Equal parts technological curiosity and social criticism, the proposal stands out by fundamentally rethinking the approach to incarceration.</image:caption>

<image:caption>1st prize – Nu Oil by Felix Yang and Thomas Noussis JURY’S COMMENTS: Nu Oil not only envisions a new architecture for filling stations, but an entirely new method of distribution. By challenging the actual concept of refueling, this proposal at once disappears the typical filling station and adds a “futuristic” one, full of potentials. Even the ground apparatus – referencing the gas-guzzling filling station typology of the past – supersedes its predecessor in a far more spatially efficient way. Much like Amazon’s delivery drones or Google’s proposed Wi-Fi blimps, this scheme is defined by a growing collective desire to be less connected to physical, built infrastructure and shaped more by the potential imbued in simple, semi-autonomous technologies. The floating vessel idea would eliminate the need for intrusive and expensive infrastructure by bringing fuel directly to the user. Underground oil tanks that leak and pollute, and unsightly power lines that are vulnerable in storms would no longer be needed. This must of course be seen in the light of having giant blimps full of fuel hovering over our cities and rural lands. It takes advantage of current technologies and offers new uses for them. As a floating refueling point, Nu Oil can provide fuel and other sustenance to people in all sorts of dire conditions. This additional feature of disaster and emergency response is precisely the type of bonus feature architecture should always strive to accommodate. The proposal is presented in a simple and straightforward way, clear and informative.</image:caption>

<image:title>Filling Station(s)</image:title>
<image:caption>2nd prize – Modular Filling Station by Mattias Dahlberg, Robin Krasse and Karl Lagerqvist JURY’S COMMENTS: Modular Filling Station has a pragmatic approach to the future of filling stations: there are no extravagant ideas, just a straightforward but thoughtful analysis of what a filling station is – and can be, depending on location. Passing over rethinking the actual concept of refueling, the proposal focuses mainly on a universal aesthetics for the typology. It evokes a traditional infrastructure form, linking the past to the future. Part ruin, part construction site, it provides spaces for a multitude of other programs, be it canoes, fishing huts or Apples stores. While the design clearly feels at home on relatively empty sites, an urban example would have been useful to gauge its adaptability to different environments The concrete modules possess a timeless beauty, as if they have always been present: basic building blocks that seem as capable on their own as they are when being part of a substantial development. Although you could argue that the components are basic enough to be a viable option regardless of local economy, they do require an enormous amount of material to complete a simple task. The presentation effortlessly captures the essence of the design variations, and explains the concept satisfactory without using any descriptive text, save for en excerpt from a poem to set the tone.</image:caption>

<image:title>Filling Station(s)</image:title>
<image:caption>3rd prize – Fill Up Here by Alex Cox JURY’S COMMENTS: By placing people at the center of the design rather than vehicles, Fill Up Here shifts focus from present-day filling stations to those of the future. The increasing fuel efficiency of modern cars will slowly but surely put emphasis on refueling the travelers themselves rather than their vehicles. The function of the service station – whether it is to store fuel, serve food, or house people – is adapted to the pod. This opens up an interesting discussion about whether or not architecture should adapt to the user or if the user should be expected to adapt to the architecture. While the “one size fits all” approach never seems to be the most ideal – it always requires so much compromise – it is convincing as a viable solution to any site. It deals with the activities that these pods can provide for an uncertain future, without focusing on the design too much – even though it has been considered in terms of dimensions of these activities. Another benefit of the pod approach is its allowing for technological changes in the future while still providing for a clear vision of the filling station and its accoutrements. Presentation-wise, the proposal does a great job of showing, rather than telling, through carefully selected vignettes. And while the graphic style is distinctly playful on the surface, the proposal reveals a deep understanding of the brief.</image:caption>

<image:title>Filling Station(s)</image:title>
<image:caption>Honorable mention – Absent by Filip Kabelis and Maria Wronska JURY’S COMMENTS: Absent is at the same time a very modest and a very bold proposal. Rendering the filling stations of the future virtually non-existent, it presents an ideal scenario: the stations disappear, and consequently large quantities of space are made available. However, while it solves the problem of the unattractive filling station, it leaves the associated issues and opportunities largely unaddressed. By relying solely on technology for locating the refueling points and refraining from using architecture in any sense to announce their existence, the proposal takes a very clear stand against the visual pollution presented by today’s filling stations. By doing so, it positions itself in a future (and global economy) where everyone has access to smart phones or equivalent technology. The conversational tone of the presentation works well for a proposal that refuses to compromise, wanting to offer something that is as beneficial to a pedestrian as it is to a driver.</image:caption>

<image:caption>1st prize - Cine’stival by Etienne Fabre and Jean-Emmanuel David JURY’S COMMENTS: Cine’stival provides an insightful take on the state of cinema today. Anchored in research, the proposal offers a beautifully visualized response to the issue at hand. By inviting the public to fully participate in all aspects of the cinematic experience, the mix of program reinforces the proposal’s premise, with the architectural space corresponding appropriately. As a venue dedicated to promoting independent movies and at the same time inviting the general public to take part in Q&A’s and lectures, Cine’stival presents an interesting and credible way of maintaining the cinema as vigorous part of culture in the future. The coherent presentation ties it all together into a fully dedicated and accessible film festival venue - a truly rare thing these days.</image:caption>

<image:caption>2nd prize - Symbiotic Venue by Nada Alqallaf and Jaime Sevilla JURY’S COMMENTS: Incorporating a film school into the cinema allows the proposal to grow beyond being ‘a cinema and a school that happens to share the same building’. This is strengthened by the architectural composition, which works very well with the idea: the concept of looking back towards the English theatre creates a design that allows audience and students to effortlessly enter a symbiotic relationship, enriching the experience of both parties. Using the interstitial space as another theatrical vehicle allows everyday uses, such as circulation within the building, to become another opportunity for spectator viewing.</image:caption>

By offering much more than just a glimpse into the production side of the industry, Peep(le) Show invites an audience straight into the heart of film production . The simple black box opens up to a dynamic interior, designed to meet the needs of both professionals and general public, at the same time allowing for subtle overlaps and encounters. <image:caption>Honorable mention - Cinema Obscura by Matt Sawyer JURY’S COMMENTS: By substituting the cinema of today with a venue for contemplation and reflection, Cinema Obscura asks the important question of whether there actually is a need for further input in a hectic city like London. <image:caption>1st prize – Here, In Our Backyard by Hyjnid Metaj and Elizabeth Yeoh JURY’S COMMENTS: Here, In Our Backyard’s successful combination of well-thought-out concept, detailed building program, and appealing presentation makes it a worthy winner. By offering treatment therapy in combination with public programs like the food garden, kitchen and outdoor dining, the proposal invites anyone to visit and organically get to know new people within the community, quietly dispelling prejudice on all sides. The secondary activities also provide visitors with opportunities for personal self-reflection rather than social activities if desired. Architecturally the varying degrees of building permeability is compelling, and by allowing the building spatiality to follow the program functions make for a varied yet coherent design with the exterior stair as a clear invitation for people passing by to sit down for a while and for kids to play on. The beautiful hand-drawn illustrations and story vignettes communicate the ideas very convincingly.</image:caption>

<image:caption>2nd prize – Common Ground by Cindy Nachareun, Melissa Amodeo, Natalie Sandelli and Vivian Ton JURY’S COMMENTS: By inviting those working to overcome addiction – and those safely sheltered from it – to draw on the notion of art and creativity to process or understand their situation, Common Ground strikes a very convincing balance between clinic and art studio where anyone in the community is invited to attend. Along with a gallery and an area for outdoor activity, the incorporation of these secondary functions gives people the opportunity to focus on a creative outlet while at the same time meeting and getting to know new people for who they are as a person, without any preconceived labels. A formally unique proposal, the curving wood facade is an open and intriguing face on the street. Another nice architectural touch of the concept is the idea of paving the floor with ceramic tiles created by those attending pottery sessions upstairs, giving the clinic a continuously evolving appearance.</image:caption>

<image:caption>3rd prize – A Roof, A Fusion, A Cure by Yiran Ma JURY’S COMMENTS: A proposal with a strong architectural gesture, A Roof, A Fusion, A Cure has an appealing clarity of form and attempt at communal outreach. The shape and translucency of the upper level has the potential to act as a beacon in the neighbourhood, figuratively in the daytime and literally in the evening - an icon for inclusion and community activity. It has a good balance of public and private space, encouraging integration with the community while still allowing for privacy where needed. The undulating facade toward the street creates a soft and welcoming interface with the public. The inclusion of a ground floor exhibition area dedicated to the opioid epidemic - as well as the entire upper floor focused on lectures and events - highlights the intention of A Roof, Fusion, A Cure to involve and educate the public, presumably leading to a more involved understanding of the epidemic’s impact on society, and how to help. The muted playfulness of color palette and illustration style helps to reinforce the inviting character of both building and presentation.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Honorable mention – An Embodied Encounter by Zishi Li JURY’S COMMENTS: By focusing on the story of a set of plausible characters from different sides of opioid addiction, An Embodied Encounter vividly argues for the importance of empathy to combat the stigma of addiction. At the same time pivotal aspects of concept and design are communicated through subtle hints in the text, effortlessly explaining the project without relying on traditional architectural tools of communication. The presentation style works well with concept and story theme, with the illustrations giving the text additional depth – and vice versa.</image:caption>

<image:title>Emotions, Architecture, Opioids</image:title>
<image:caption>Honorable mention – The Shade-Shack by Julian Bektashi JURY’S COMMENTS: By offering a beautiful green space within the structure, the Shade-Shack merges the notion of inside and outside, and entices passers-by to enter for a moment of pause and reflection. Consistently using exposed wood as the main building material, the structure stands out in the area, at the same time invoking curiosity. The material allows for a subtle but continuous change as the wood ages over time Captivating renderings of the interior and clear drawing communicate the design well, as does the text justifying design decisions.</image:caption>
